Evaluation of Brief

I really enjoyed this brief towards the end. but After my initial idea to produce a set of ten posters, 5 postcards for each poster, stickers and the pack design, the excitement of it all wore off for a while. I found it to be far to time consuming and wasteful. I also found the process of it frustrating at times. What I will say though is that I learn a lot more about the use of illustrator and the process of making my vectors. It also allowed me to apply my work to a rang of print based media which was beneficial. Long story aka brief short, I just wish I hadn't chosen this as my first brief and that I hadn't wasted so much time on it.

Final Presentation Boards

Final presentation boards! These are screen grabs of the final layouts I took to print this week. I feel they're a much better improvement on the initial layouts. For starters they've got two strong boards at the beginning and end and then the middle ones aren't as cramped as the others.

I feel they're as good as I could get them. If I was to change anything about them, I'd re-take my product shots. After looking at these for over a week now, I've decided I should have photographed them on a grey or pure white background. I stuck with the wood background ones because all the rest of my product shots have been taken on this background. However, with the pack being printed on brown paper, this clashes slightly against the brown tones of the wood. Other than that, I hope they successfully portray the brief and resolution clearly enough.

Development Boards

These are screen grabs of the boards that I took to the final crit last Thursday. I came away realising that I had got it all wrong and that I was basically trying to guide the viewer through my project from the very start to the final product. Not a good move. I needed to re-think what my first board was all about and make it an 'impact' board. This is basically the best image I can take of the over all products enlarged on the first board. What I decided to do was make my last board my first and re asses my in between boards and content, ending with another impact-ish board. So to speak, bookending the brief with two strong boards. I felt that the product shots that I had were ok, but perhaps needed editing slightly, cropping and levels. Other than that, I felt I knew what I had to do in order to try and make them as best I could.

Design in Context

I feel I can safely say that I am pleased with these product shots. Although they are not solely of the product and there is a lot of background surrounding the product, I feel it shows a good likeness to where you would actually find the Don't Panic packs on display.

I think the first image is probably my favourite. it show the product in the Don't Panic box, but it also shows the products you typically find surrounding the box. This shot was taken in our student union canteen area, a typical place to find free handouts, packs, flyers and booklets.

Final Product Shots

These are the final product shots that i will be using for my presentation boards. I have selected them from LOTS of other potentials. I felt that these were working the best and portrayed my resolutions clearly enough. I have cropped them and edited them in photoshop to leave what you see now. I realise however I may find that I need to re-shoot some of them or re-edit them slightly when applying them to my boards. For now however I'm think they work pretty well.

For the purpose of the poster shots, I have chosen to just photograph one poster from each category. Photographing them all would take time and I'm not sure it would be relevant to do them all. I feel that these two get across the message well enough on their own.

Final Products

These are the final products I have produced for the Don't Panic poster brief.

I think I've exhausted the contents and brief. For a poster brief, I've tried to extend it by producing two sets of five posters. Each poster comes with two sticker strips in the pack I've designed and 5 post cards. In total I have produced, One pack, 50 postcards, 10 posters and printed two mock up sticker sheets.
I've quite enjoyed this brief as it has allowed me to illustrate completely. And develop my line drawings slightly. Some are much stronger than others and some I really hate to look at already. Every time I feel I can produce better and learn something new when I try to put my designs in to print. I would definitely improve this though now looking back which I would like to do at a later stage. I might possibly keep this going as a personal illustration brief to produce packs of my illustration and make sets of posters.
